Why Choose Us
Rooted in community,
committed to your well-being
Katara Therapy was founded because we saw a need for more intensive, skilled therapeutic services within the rural communities of Southwest Michigan. Too often, families in Van Buren and Berrien counties found themselves on waitlists or turned away from programs that could not accommodate their needs. We set out to change that.
Over the past nine years, we have built a practice grounded in three core values: kindness, extensive training, and an inviting work environment. We believe that when therapists are well-supported and continuously growing in their skills, clients receive the highest quality of care. Our team holds specialized training in evidence-based methods including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Trauma-Focused CBT.
Whether you are an adult seeking support for anxiety or depression, a parent looking for guidance with your child's behavioral challenges, or someone healing from past trauma, we meet you where you are. Our offices in South Haven, Coloma, and Mattawan are designed to feel warm and welcoming — not clinical — because healing begins when you feel safe.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect during my first therapy session?
Your initial appointment is a chance for us to get to know you and understand your concerns. We will discuss your history, current challenges, and what you hope to achieve through therapy. This session typically lasts about 60 minutes. Our therapists create a warm, judgment-free space so you can feel comfortable sharing at your own pace.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of our practice. Everything you share in session is protected by law and professional ethics. There are very limited exceptions, such as situations involving imminent harm to yourself or others, or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. Your therapist will explain these boundaries during your first session.
What therapeutic approaches do you use?
Our therapists are trained in a variety of evidence-based methods including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). We tailor our approach to each client's unique needs and goals.
Do you offer telehealth sessions?
Yes, we offer secure telehealth sessions for clients who prefer the convenience of meeting from home or who are unable to visit our offices in person. Telehealth is available for most of our services and is conducted through a HIPAA-compliant video platform.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If you are feeling overwhelmed, experiencing persistent sadness or anxiety, struggling with relationships, or dealing with a traumatic experience, therapy can be incredibly beneficial. You do not need to be in crisis to seek help — therapy is also valuable for personal growth, stress management, and building resilience. We are happy to discuss whether our services might be a good fit for you.
How often should I attend therapy?
The frequency of sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. Many clients begin with weekly sessions and may adjust over time as they progress. Your therapist will work with you to determine a schedule that supports your healing journey without feeling overwhelming.
